Scar Improvement
Today, there are a number of scar therapy products available
for use without a prescription. Some are available in
large sheets, which can be cut to fit the scar(s), and
some are customized and pre-cut for the exact procedure
(such as mastopexy or reduction incisions). The material
can be worn under clothing, can be removed and reused,
and should be applied daily for 6-12 weeks for optimal
results.
While the exact mechanism of action is still unknown,
many patients have observed flattening and decreased
redness of their scars. Scars which are a few weeks
old, or those occurring years ago, can both experience
improvement, but each patient will see varying degrees
of improvement.
Scar Revision
Scar revision surgery, or the surgical improvement of
an existing scar, is a basic procedure for most plastic
surgeons. Whether created by a plastic surgery procedure,
by female surgery, general surgery or trauma, often
a scar’s appearance can be improved by making
it smaller or flatter.
Many factors, such as location and orientation of scar,
patient skin type and skin tone, and patient compliance
during the healing process should be considered by the
surgeon. Depending upon the extent of revision necessary,
the surgery may be performed under local anesthesia
or intravenous sedation. Special sutures and surgical
dressings may be applied, along with special instructions
concerning healing and sun exposure.
Scar revision can be performed alone, or combined with
another surgical procedure depending upon individual
circumstances.
