After Tummy Tuck Surgery: What Will My Scars Look Like?

woman's stomach

While there is no getting around having a scar after your tummy tuck surgery, there are many ways to reduce the prominence of this scar. Most women want to know if their scar will be visible while wearing a bikini or underwear after their surgery. While Dr. James Matas can likely place the scar low enough on the abdomen that the scar will remain hidden, you can bring your favorite style of swimsuit or underwear to your consultation so the placement of the incision can be appropriately planned. Most patients are able to wear a bikini to the beach or pool within a few months of their tummy tuck.

The scar from the incision across your lower abdomen will likely be red for the first few months after surgery. Over the course of a year, the scar typically flattens and fades significantly. During recovery there are a few actions you can take to further minimize the scar’s appearance, such as avoiding tanning beds and never exposing your scar to direct sunlight. Additionally, we provide silicone-based scar reduction products to all tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck patients in a post-operative Patient Care Kit.
