How Does KYBELLA^® Work?

KYBELLA^® is composed of deoxycholic acid, a substance found naturally in the body that is involved in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When KYBELLA^® is injected beneath the skin, the solution damages and dissolves fat cells, allowing them to be carried away from the area by natural metabolic processes. As the fat is reabsorbed by the body, volume in the treated area diminishes, revealing a more slender, tighter under-chin and upper neck contour. Results typically appear quickly and may continue to improve for up to three to four months after the final KYBELLA^® treatment session.

The KYBELLA^® Procedure

To begin treatment, the designated region is numbed with an ice compress to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. KYBELLA^® is then administered into the treatment area in an evenly placed series of micro-injections. Once the injections have been performed, the treatment sites are cooled with ice compresses, which reduces any swelling and redness that may result. The entire session can last between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the extent of the treatment. Dr. Matas may recommend multiple treatment sessions (spaced about four weeks apart) to achieve optimal results with KYBELLA^®.

KYBELLA^® Results

Typically, KYBELLA^® achieves the best results for patients with good skin elasticity and isolated fat volume beneath the chin and jawline. KYBELLA^® does not improve the appearance of excess skin or muscle laxity, and it is not the ideal solution for treating large quantities of fat. Individuals who present these anatomical attributes may be better served by a dynamic procedure such as neck lift, which surgically adjusts neck musculature, removes fat, and treats the presence of redundant skin.
