Resources and Articles : The Evolution of a Practice

After a 30-year career as a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. James Matas has seen many trends within his specialty. Drawing from insight and past experience, his private practice has evolved into a first-class plastic surgery practice, well positioned to understand and meet the highly personal needs of his patients.

The Advanced Centre for Plastic Surgery, located next to Dr. Phillips Hospital, has recently completed structural renovations and aesthetic enhancements – their own facelift. The physical environment has gone through a metamorphosis, transforming from a typical medical office to a contemporary, Asian-themed oasis. When redesigning the practice, earthy elements were used to evoke feelings of calm, strength and stability. Using the Chinese art of “feng shui”, a dramatic waterwall with cascading water was placed near the entrance to greet visitors and increase the positive flow of energy. Stone, granite, slate, exotic woods and soft lighting were also used to complete the tranquil setting.

In addition to the aesthetic changes, the practice has added a medical day spa with private treatment room to offer more comprehensive services. Injectables and soft tissue fillers like Botox®, Juvederm® and Radiesse® also continue to be popular treatments performed by Dr. Matas, and are suitable for younger and older patients alike.

According to him, these added services enhance the results he can achieve with surgery. Patients vary in the degree of change they wish to see, from subtle to dramatic, and these other treatments give every patient effective options to choose from. “And with so many day spas popping up in our area, says Dr. Matas, I also wanted to regulate the quality and type of treatments our patients receive.”

On the surgical side of the practice, facial, breast and body contouring procedures are performed often, but trends in the industry have changed some of the original techniques. Lesser invasive facial procedures include the “Short-Scar Facelift” (MACS Lift), performed with a smaller incision and reduced surgical time, and the Endoscopic Brow Lift, designed to lift and reshape the forehead and eyebrows using only tiny incisions. We are also experiencing a marked increase in massive weight loss patients looking for surgery to reduce their excessive skin after gastric bypass.

All surgical patients follow a pre and post-operative protocol established by the practice. By using alternative therapies like specially-formulated vitamin supplements and a special technique of massage therapy, patients experience a speedier recovery and have a greater level of satisfaction when healing.

With an accredited surgical facility on site, and anesthesia services conducted by board-certified anesthesiologists, patients can have outpatient surgery or surgery with overnight stay in a safe and affordable manner. Dr. Phillips Hospital, an Orlando Health facility, is also located next door to the practice as an alternate site for surgical care.

Whatever service we are providing, our mission is still the same – to build a trusting relationship with each patient, to provide realistic expectations and quality care in a beautiful and tranquil setting.
